First Parent Teacher Fellowship

We had fun at our first PTF on 26 January.  Teachers, parents and students had the opportunity to  spend time with each other.   Some of the activities  that CCS has to offer was on display, and the necessary eats and drinks were very welcome on a hot day.  Here are some snapshots of the day.

2013 PTF 01We look forward to meeting our new parents on Saturday, 2 February  for the first Parent Orientation of the year.

Are we aware of what our children see on TV?

Today, as I sat listening to a level two boy reading, we read about how God only wants us to see and hear good things. I explained that this means we shouldn't listen to music with bad words or watch bad things on TV. I told him that if we did, we would probably also have bad dreams. Immediately he said " Oh, that happened to me when I watched Vampire Diaries, so I changed it to another channel!" I'm sure we have all had the same thing happen in our homes and unfortunately we can never erase those images. Just another reminder for us to make sure that we know what they're up to!

Grade O wisdom!

This  conversation took place between Ma’am Thea and a Grade O boy:

Ma’am Thea :“We are going to ask the taxis to park in front of the church.”

Grade O:  “Oh, we also have a taxi!  There are 6 seats in our taxi.  One for Mom, one for Dad, one for my brother and one for me.”

Ma’am Thea:  “Oh, so there are two empty seats!  You must ask your mommy for 2 baby sisters, then your taxi will be full.”

A very shocked Grade O:  “No, Ma’am Thea!  Everything will then be covered in lipstick!”

A bit of homework for our parents!

After having been a CCS parent, even for a few days, you will probably have noticed that we speak a whole new language of our own! We have supervisors instead of teachers, PACEs instead of books, Math instead of Maths, Learning Centers instead of classrooms, and then there's that American spelling and punctuation. Even our reading is done with the assistance of strange symbols... I am amazed once again, after having been away from level two children for a few years, to see what a wonderful tool our sound and symbol chart is. As a child sits and ponders a word, a simple stripe or bucket shape above a letter, seems to instantly flick a switch of recognition. The symbol and sound chart is normally situated inside the cover page of most PACEs, right at the bottom. Please take some time to ask your child to explain these sounds to you and then use them to help them to unravel the mystery of new words.

First day of school

There was great excitement in the air as students started the new school year.  The excitement is evident in the beautiful photos that Michelle took.  Just look at all the smiling faces in these sample photos.  I can’t wait to see the rest of the photos!

Reading at CCS

This year promises to be an exciting new adventure in the reading department! As the new "Roving Reading Tutor" I hope to pick up lots of handy hints in the various Learning Centers that I visit, these I plan to share with you to make homework time easier and more fun. So watch this space.
I would also love to meet you and answer any questions that you may have with regards to reading. I will be available most Wednesday mornings between seven and half past so please write me a note in your child's homework diary to book a spot!
